On 17 July 1987, Mr J.J. Dalton was given a heartwarming 'send off' on commencement of his retirement. As our first Headmaster, he had started a small secondary modern school, taken it through becoming a comprehensive and seen the addition of a Sixth Form.
The new Headmaster, Mr A.B. Duffin took up his post on 1 September 1987.
The German Exchange between St. Mary's and Franziskus-Gymnasium in Germany was set up by Helmuth Feuerriegel, Michael Walsh and Mrs Childs in 1987, bringing together up to 34 students each year, enabling them to gain the unique experience of visiting each others’ home, school and circle of friends, overcoming any borders or language barriers.
In October 1998, St. Mary's took part in an 'It's a Knockout' style event near Le Touquet in Northern France, together with other schools.
The inaugural meeting of the School Council took place on 6 November 1989.
The school celebrated its silver anniversary (25 years) in 1989 with a special Mass in our Sports Hall on December 8. The Bishop of Leeds, David Konstant was the leading concelebrant.
